Claim: John McCain is honest and fully competent to be president
Truth: John McCain is either dishonest, has a very bad memory, or both

Anyone question John McCain's memory runs the risk of being accused of age discrimination, so let's say right up front, no evidence has been put forward that John McCain is suffering from age-related memory loss. As the following video clips and articles will show, however, John McCain has on several occasions flat-out denied having said things that he was previously on the record as saying. He has not simply said, "I didn't mean it that way," but clearly and literally denied ever saying them.

This leaves only two options. The first is that he genuinely does not remember saying them. This is completely plausible, given the number of on the record things that a public figure says in their life, but when the subject matter is of such high importance, this kind of memory failure is worrying. The second possibility is that McCain does remember what he has previously said, and is only pretending otherwise to avoid the necessity to answer uncomfortable questions about why he is now saying something different. There is of course the third possibility that both of these things are partially true at the same time--that is, that McCain is lying to himself about whether he remembers what he said. This would tend to indicate that he says things he does not mean, and then later does not clearly recall what he said because it was never his true opinion.

Here is an interview that McCain gave on September 10, 2008, to Maine TV's 207 program:

At 6:18 remaining, this exchange takes place:
Q: Let 's move on to what you say is the number one issue facing the United States in our time. And that is the challenge of addressing Islamist extremism. What credentials does Gov. Palin have -- in national security, diplomacy, foreign policy -- that qualify her to be your partner in that, on that issue: the fight against Islamic extremism?
McCain: Well, obviously the economy is also a major challenge facing America.
Q: No, I'm using your words, Senator McCain, you have said, this summer...
McCain: No, I said...
Q: That the number one challenge of our time is Islamic extremism...
McCain: No, I said the greatest challenge of our time is national security threats. I've also said that jobs and the economy are the number one issue facing America.

From a speech McCain gave on March 28, 2008:

"It will strengthen us to confront the transcendent challenge of our time: the threat of radical Islamic terrorism. This challenge is transcendent not because it is the only one we face. There are many dangers in today's world, and our foreign policy must be agile and effective at dealing with all of them. But the threat posed by the terrorists is unique."

More on inaccurate statements by McCain in the above interview

Here is another video from Brave New Films which shows McCain denying that he wore body armor when he went to Baghdad, denying that he said General Petrayus drives around in an unarmored Humvee, saying the economy is better and then denying that he said it, and more.
