CLAIM: John McCain is a "maverick" who has often challenged George W Bush
TRUTH: John McCain voted with George W Bush's wishes over 90% of the time last year.

This video is from The Daily Show--in theory a comedy show--but if you watch the entire thing, they do a side-by-side comparison of the convention speeches of Bush in 2000 and McCain in 2008. McCain's promises to "change Washington" are exactly the same things that Bush was sayig then, often using the exact same words!

John McCain was captured and tortured during Viet Nam. While under torture, he signed false confessions and false accusations against the United States. These facts are documented in his own biography.

No one is trying to condemn Senator McCain for breaking under torture and making those false confessions, because that is what torture is meant to achieve. Knowing this to be true, McCain spoke vehemently in the Senate against the sanctioning of torture and waterboarding, but when a bill was proposed that explicitly stated the United States will not use waterboarding, McCain voted against it. Thus, while he spoke a good game, when the time came to vote, he did what Bush wanted him to do.

McCain touts his story of being a veteran, but when Senator Jim Webb of Virginia put forward his "New GI Bill" to help soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan get a college education, John McCain was the only member of the Senate who didn't show up to vote on the bill. Once again, rather than actually fight for veterans he claims are his brothers in arms, McCain supported the Bush administration's line that giving college benefits to veterans might actually give them an incentive to...go to college.
